This panel discussion was about the situation of queer people within the hacker and nerd community, a very important and under-reported subject. We first did a show like this for signal radio on the 4th Chaos Communication Camp back in 2011 and rejoined later that year at the 28th Chaos Communication Congress. With me were Mitch Altman, Fabienne Serriere, Jimmie P Rodgers, Willow Brugh, Stephan Urbach, Lisa (Video-Angel on the 28c3), Rubin Starset and many others from the audience. On the decks was my dear friend Koen Martens and thanks to Matthias Preuß for the recording and post-production.

My moderation was mostly targeted at the radio listeners, at the time I wasn’t aware that there will be a video recording at all. I hope everything is understandable and the discussion is interesting for you!

I share most of your analyses of the general situation concerning copyright restricted materials, but see some fundamental differences between music and academic texts.

One important point shared by a hacker and academic mindset is the fundamental claim that all information should be free. This is the most effective way to increase knowledge by allowing others to build upon what already exists and the opposite scenario of restricting access to certain information arises the difficult decision upon who draws the line of what’s available to the public and what’s not. Especially when a cultural work, may it be a text, music or recipe, becomes so widely popular that whole generations are influenced by it, we would loose a lot of our freedom of thinking and acting by restricting it to commercial interests. Walt Disney is such an bad example.

I am part of the generation you are writing about. For me PDFs are nearly the only source for my academic reading and I love it this way. I have grown up in the digital age and I am used to reading on screen, organize and backup digital and most of all: share the things I like.
That’s the most essential value added by lossless digital copying which goes hand in hand with the human desire to share (see Marcel Mauss – the gift)!

That content producers want to have money for what they do is a fact I know from experience. I am doing my podcast Talking Anthropology and not getting any money out of it so far, but this doesn’t decrease my motivation and pleasure for this project. At one stage I definitely would like to live from it, just because it should be the aim of every human being to be able to do what we really love. But the internet is new and we are still at the beginning of implementing micro or social payment systems, like flattr for example.

The problem I see at the moment is the fragmentation of the system. In my opinion it would have been the duty of Universities to implement systems were the texts of their scholars are downloadable and discussable. Imagine a distributed repository for all texts of a certain discipline with the space of discussing and peer reviewing them.
If we would have such a system in social science it would be only one further step to implement a payment system, but not for buying access to the texts, instead honoring the authors of the texts one has just read, because we are all so active readers this would be a much more direct and a just form of quality review, filtering and payment.
Right now most of the money one spends for a scientific book is going to the publisher, who in most cases does nothing else for this money then giving his name and printing someone else’s work on dead trees. Are these companies the types of gatekeepers we want to have in this digital 21st century and do we want to rely upon them as our major filter or quality standard?

Projekteinreichung für das Big Brother Stipendium 2010

Der Audio-Podcast „Morsezeichen“ bringt Grundkompetenz in digitalen
Menschenrechten und Netzkultur zu einer neuen Öffentlichkeit!

Themen, die fortlaufend wichtiger für immer mehr Menschen werden, müssen auch richtig aufbereitet sein. Ein Podcast eignet sich um eine große Anzahl an Menschen über komplexe Sachverhalte aufzuklären – ein mannigfaltiges Thema mit vielen Facetten (wie z.B. Netzneutralität, Datenschutz und Datensicherheit) lässt sich auf rein textlicher Ebene kaum vermitteln. Wir wollen Grundkenntnisse schaffen, Gefahren aufzeigen und positive Aspekte herausstreichen.

Das Morsezeichen war der erste Code, der die Menschen weltweit verbunden hat. Sein Beep Ton ist allen Menschen bekannt und zum Inbegriff für Telekommunikation geworden. Besonders, wenn der Wirkungskreis über Internet-affine Menschen hinaus ausgedehnt werden soll, hat dieser Podcast das Potential, diese Menschen zu erreichen.

Das Format soll prinzipiell bidirektional gestaltet sein, offene Feedback-Kanäle werden direkt in das Sendungskonzept und die Gestaltung miteinbezogen. Ziel des Podcasts ist es zu sensibilisieren, eine Referenz aufzubauen und Leute für das Netz zu begeistern!

Durch kontinuierliche Veröffentlichung neuer Sendungen, dem Vorstellen und Vernetzen des Projektes auf BarCamps und im studentischen Umfeld und der Kooperation mit Radio- Sendern und anderen Medien, soll ein möglichst großer Kreis an RezipientInnen erreicht werden. Der Podcast beinhaltet selbstverständlich ein Logo und einen Jingle, sowie zu jeder Folge einen Blogeintrag und einen Wikiartikel.

Trägerverein

Die NPO Transforming Freedom ist Trägerverein des Projekts. Ziel von Transforming Freedom ist die freie Bereitstellung von Vorträgen und Interviews mit Fokus auf digitaler Kultur. Aus den sich überschneiden Zielvorgaben beider Plattformen ergeben sich Synergien in der Form, dass ausgewählte Podcast-Folgen transkribiert werden und neben erweiterten Zitations- und Suchmöglichkeiten als Zusatznutzen auch barrierefrei zur Verfügung stehen.

Projektleiter

Projektleiter ist Thomas Lohninger, geboren am 23.12.1986 in Wien. Ich studiere an der Uni Wien Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie, arbeite halbtags als Softwareentwickler, engagiere mich seit meinem 14. Lebensjahr in NGOs aus dem Umfeld von Menschenrechten (Zivildienst bei ZARA, Anti-Diskriminierungs-Trainer der BJV), bei den Grünen Vorwahlen und zuletzt bei den #unibrennt-Protesten.

Als Anthropologe übersetze ich zwischen verschiedenen Kontexten und versuche Verständnis unter themenfremden Menschen zu erzeugen. Genau das war der Grund, weshalb ich im Sommer 2009 mit meinem ersten Podcast „Talking Anthropology“ begonnen habe:

Talking Anthropology verfolgt eine ähnliche Strategie wie der Morsezeichen-Podcast, mit dem Fokus auf anderen Themen und einem eher akademischen Publikum. Das Grundkonzept ist aber schon gut zu erkennen.

Ich will diesen Podcast machen und das Big Brother Stipendium würde mir die Möglichkeit dazu geben! Damit hätte ich die Zeit und Ressourcen, um den Morsezeichen- Podcast professionell zu produzieren und in einem breiten Personenkreis zu etablieren. Wenn das Projekt gestartet wird, sehe ich es als längerfristige Verpflichtung, es als den Netz-Podcast in Österreich zu etablieren und den Brückenschlag zu neuen Menschen zu schaffen, die heute noch nicht so begeistert und bewandert vom Internet sind wie wir!
